We love exploring unique recipes that come from every corner of Italy. From the shores of Sicily to the hills of Tuscany, every region has something to offer. But our latest obsession has taken us straight to the heart of Rome: the Pinsa Romana.
What is Pinsa Romana?
Pinsa Romana is an ancient Roman flatbread that’s still popular today. The name ‘pinsa’ comes from the Latin word ‘pinsere,’ meaning ‘to stretch or push,’ which refers to how they handle the dough.
Pinsa is known for its light and airy texture, with a crust that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Made from a blend of wheat, soy, and rice flours, the Pinsa Romana is fermented for an extended period, which gives it its distinct taste.
How is Pinsa Different from Pizza?
While Pinsa Romana and pizza are similar, there are some key differences that make Pinsa a unique treat. Here are a few of the main distinctions:
- Dough Composition: Pinsa dough uses a mix of wheat, soy, and rice flours, unlike traditional pizza dough, which mainly uses wheat flour. This blend makes Pinsa lighter.
- Hydration and Fermentation: Pinsa dough has more water and ferments longer than pizza dough. This makes the crust airy and easier to digest.
- Shape and Size: Pinsa is usually oval-shaped and a bit thicker than pizza crust, giving it a rustic, homemade feel.
- Texture: Thanks to the long fermentation and special flour blend, Pinsa crust is crispy outside and tender inside.
